Lancing sits immediately east of Worthing along the coast, which makes it one of the areas we are in most often: close enough that looking at a leak rarely has to wait for a gap in next week's diary. It is also a town built largely in one period, and that shows up in the roofs.

South Lancing went up mostly between the wars, and the result is street after street of bungalows and chalet bungalows, a very particular kind of roofing. A bungalow carries a large roof area for its footprint, so a re-roof there is a bigger job than the house looks from the pavement, and worth quoting properly rather than by the square metre. The chalet conversions bring dormers, and dormer cheeks, their flat tops and the flashing where they meet the main slope are where water almost always finds its way in. Further north, towards the older core under the downs, the stock is more mixed and more traditional. And everything south of the railway is close enough to the beach that salt-laden wind works on mortar and flashings year-round, the same way it does along Worthing seafront.
